Fishing the River Lea – Dobbs Weir

There is a great variety of fishing at Dobbs Weir, including a few very big Carp, Perch, Bream, Tench, Barbel and Roach, but the main attraction has to be the monster Chub (which are best targeted just after dark). The British record for the species was broken here on the weir pool with an 8lb 13oz specimen in 2003, this has since been broken elsewhere.

Another favourite in the pool is the Pike, spinning a dead baits work well in here, but they are best caught early morning.

Dobbs Weir

This venue can get extremely busy, so I always get here at dusk. There is parking available on the other side of the main road opposite Fish ‘n’ Eels Public House on Dobbs Weir Road.

Day Tickets are only available from the Lee Valley Park Fishery Bailiff on the bank side (he comes around on a scooter). A Night Ticket is also available for the site and must be booked in advance directly through the Bailiff: please telephone 07908 948066 this runs from 20.00hrs to 08.00hrs and is offered on a first come, first served basis.

The great thing with this river is the unknown, and a Carp of 30lb isn’t out of the question, and you may also catch the record breaking Chub.

Recommended baits include: boilies, luncheon meat, cheese, worms and maggot. It’s well fished so there is no need to over ground bait.

Fishing here is very much hit and miss, it can be very good, but the next day all you may catch are Roach and gudgeon, but for the price of the ticket, it’s well worth the money.

There is the traditional ‘close season’ on this venue from March 15th to June 15th
